The Purple Boy was the test for a longer series of instruments built with artist Justin Cooper for my 2022 exhibition, Study in Place. It is a reworking of one of my earlier cigar box kalimbas and features a chain woven into the tines to allow for an adjustable level of noise in performance. The pickup is a piezo disc, and is held in place by two-part epoxy and regular prayers.
